During the first session of the European Parliament, MEPs elected Roberta Metsola as the President. This is her second term in this position and it will last for 2.5 years.
In the vote in which 699 members participated, 562 voted for the re-election of the President of the European Parliament. Thus, Roberta Metsola achieved the highest result in the history of votes for the President of the European Parliament.
“Our Europe must be a Europe that remembers. It draws lessons from past struggles and appreciates the fight of so many who stood up for ideals that we sometimes take for granted. For all those who were displaced, who went missing, for those who stood in front of tanks and bullets on the road to escape from totalitarianism that for so long held so much of Europe. For all who believed in better and dared to dream. Our Europe must be a Europe that Adenauer, Mitterrand, Wałęsa, Fenech Adami, Havel, Veil, Falcone, Borsellino would be proud of,” said the President of the European Parliament in her speech.
Roberta Metsola achieved the highest result in the history of votes for the President of the European Parliament. She is also the youngest person in this position – she is 45 years old and comes from Malta. The President of the European Parliament represents this institution outside the European Union and in relation to other EU institutions.
