The European Commission has approved an investment of more than €136 million from the Cohesion Fund for the construction of a 29.67 km section of the S19 express road which is connecting Lublin and Rzeszów in Poland.

The new road between the Nisko South and Sokołów Małopolski North junctions allows for safer travelling and shortens journey times between major Polish cities. The construction of the road section is linked to other investments that are key elements of regional, interregional, and international transport networks.

Footpaths, cycle paths, emergency passages and bus lay-bys were built or rebuilt. Noise and safety barriers, anti-glare shields and fences were installed, together with a traffic management system. Culverts, passages for animals and other environmental protection devices were constructed, and greenery was planted at the roadside.

The project thus contributes to the creation of a cohesive, high-capacity road system connecting major regional centres with the TEN-T network and, via express roads, with Warsaw.

The specific objective of the CEF Programme is to contribute to the development of projects of common interest relating to efficient, interconnected and multimodal networks and infrastructure for smart, interoperable, sustainable, inclusive, accessible, safe and secure mobility on the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). To achieve this objective, technical assistance is provided to the Republic of Poland as the main stakeholder responsible for the successful implementation of TEN-T related infrastructure investments.
